Becky Lund honored for Nova Spotlight Award in March
It is my great honor to present Becky Lund as this month’s recipient of the Nova Classical Spotlight Award. This award was established to recognize individuals who exemplify Nova Classical Academy’s commitment to academic excellence, virtue, and a thriving school community. Through their outstanding dedication, they inspire those around them and contribute meaningfully to our pursuit of learning not for school, but for life.
Becky has taught at Nova Classical since our founding in 2003, first as a fifth-grade teacher and now as a second-grade teacher. Her instruction reflects what classical education is meant to be: rigorous, purposeful, and grounded in the Trivium. She does not simply teach the model—she embodies it—and that consistency has made her one of the most trusted instructional voices in our building.
That trust is why Becky has excelled in her service as a Pedagogy Lead, doing extensive work to refine Nova’s classical education model and make it approachable for staff who are new to it. She has a gift for translating the philosophy behind classical pedagogy into practices that new teachers can put to use right away, while continuing to support veteran staff as they deepen their own implementation. Her fingerprints are on how Nova teaches, not just what Nova teaches.
Becky’s impact reaches beyond the classroom. As the leader of the Lower School Drama Club, she has built a program so in demand among students that it has become a pillar of the community Nova strives to be, one where every student can find a place to belong and grow.
Becky has also served as a long time member of the Board, including as Secretary and as Chair of the Governance Committee. Her steady hand has been one of the driving forces behind Nova’s evolution from the hands-on administrative board that characterizes a young charter school into a true board of trustees, one built to serve the interests of the whole community rather than any single part of it. That shift asks something specific of board members: to set aside personal interest for institutional interest. Becky has done exactly that, voting against her own position when she judged it right for Nova and recognizing that doing so is the job.
Becky’s justice is evident in the classroom, where she meets every student with compassion and holds each of them to the same expectation: that they rise to their potential. Her fortitude is evident in twenty-three years of steady, purposeful service to Nova’s students and staff. Her wisdom shows in the governance structure she has helped build to serve generations of Knights she will never meet. Her temperance is reflected in her willingness to put the institution ahead of herself when the two are in tension. She is, in every sense, the epitome of consistency.
On behalf of Nova Classical Academy, I am proud to recognize and celebrate Becky Lund for her extraordinary contributions to our school. We are deeply grateful for the model she has built, the students she has shaped, and the example she sets every day.
It’s a Great Day to Be a Knight
