Verbal Reasoning

This test is designed to measure a student’s ability to apply knowledge of printed language structure and meaning appropriately, to utilize cognitive strategies in analyzing information and drawing inferences, to deduce relationships and generalize verbal attributes, and to predict outcomes and evaluate the appropriateness of predictions and strategies.

Vocabulary

This test provides insight into the breadth of the student’s reading vocabulary. With few exceptions, the targeted vocabulary is in context, and the questions reflect the wide range of instructional tasks used to promote growth in vocabulary.

Reading Comprehension

This test provides insight into a child’s general comprehension of written material through a variety of questions that tap vocabulary, the recall of factual information, the identification of main ideas, and the ability to analyze and hypothesize using information from that passage.

Writing Mechanics

This test combines the components of spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and usage to provide insight into a child’s understanding of writing conventions vital to meaningful composition.

Writing Concepts and Skills

This test provides insight into a child’s understanding of the processes and components of effective written composition. It assesses the child’s knowledge of what effective writing “looks like” and how specific samples of writing can be improved.

Quantitative Reasoning

This test is designed to measure a student’s ability to apply knowledge of mathematical concepts and principles, to demonstrate flexibility in thinking, to identify critical features in new situations, to make correct generalizations (not over-or under-generalizing), and to compare mathematical expressions.

Mathematics

This test provides insight into a child’s application of mathematical knowledge to solve problems, compute solutions, reason, estimate, and communicate in the language of mathematics.
