Why I choose to work at Nova

As the daughter of educators, education was not only our chosen profession, it was our family mission. It is no surprise that as an adult I believe and have seen firsthand that education saves lives. I choose to work at a school like Nova because it is fully invested in enacting social justice—where all students have access to the tools for learning, the curriculum is viewed as rich and alive and is sequenced to prevent knowledge gaps and repetition, teachers set a high bar for achievement and help their students grow intellectually and virtuously, parents are engaged in supporting their children’s development as scholars and caring citizens, and each of us works for the betterment of the children we serve and the wider community. I also choose to work at Nova because I am passionate about the Classical model of education where the pursuit of knowledge and character are inextricably linked and are meaningless without the other. Through the full expression of the Trivium, we are endowed with a common language, a dependence upon logic and reason, and an ability to create and communicate with eloquence and humanity. I am proud to be at Nova!

Hobbies/Interests

I adore reading, drawing, writing, traveling, cooking, spoiling my ancient cat, singing, learning and practicing languages, taking long walks or bike rides, volunteering, or playing word games of any kind.

Favorite author/thinker/historical figure (and why)

This is a terribly hard question as it changes with each new “era” in my life…. My favorite authors are the ones who surprise me—either with the beauty of their imagery, elegance of their language, or their clarity of insight into what it is to be human. Some of the writers and thinkers who have consistently taken my breath away include countless poets; Jane Austen; William Shakespeare; Vincent van Gogh (through his letters to his brother, Theo); Plato; King David; Abraham Lincoln; Dostoyevsky; C.S. Lewis; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Annie Dillard; Helen Keller; Willa Cather; and so many more….

Personal motto

“Every block of stone has a statue inside it, and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” —Michelangelo

“It is better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness.” —Eleanor Roosevelt
